Wild Art

August 26th, 2009

Members of Arts Group of the SVCT provided a selection of fun family art activities, with a local environmental theme, on 22nd August, at the recent Wet ‘n’ Wild Weekend.

There was kite making, animal masks, paw printing and story telling too. While the youngsters wore their masks they also did some pond dipping.

The children (and adults) had a wonderful time being creative, as shown by the photos you can see on our Gallery.

John Seward, from the SVCT, has written a play (based on the book by Sabine Baring-Gould) featuring the story of Winefred, a young lady who experienced life in the mid 1800s and particularly the landslip on the Undercliff in 1839. John related some of the story of Winefred to an attentive audience of all ages.

A lovely time was had by all!

SVCT receives donation from Grizzly

April 3rd, 2009

Various members of the SVCT helped out at the Grizzly event on 8th  March this year. Their efforts were rewarded with a donation of £250 for the Trust, which was handed out at the ceremony on the evening of Friday 3rd April. Julie Richens collected the cheque and the SVCT are very grateful to the Axe Valley Runners who organise the Grizzly each year.

SVCT hosts visit by Jurassic Coast Interpretation Board on 3rd April

April 3rd, 2009

Last Friday, Seaton Visitor Centre Trust (SVCT) hosted a visit of the Chairman, Peter Cuthbe and other members of the Exmouth and Seaton Interpretation Centres Board. The Board represents all the partners in the two projects and encourages input from the SVCT on the needs of its proposed centre for Seaton. The Board were keen to see the two potential Seaton Visitor Centre sites, now that planning applications have been submitted to EDDC from both Sainsburys and Tesco, plus some of the unique and special offerings for visitors to Seaton.

The SVCT would like to thank Seaton Tramway who arranged a special tram journey to Colyford to enable Kate Tobin, from the EDDC Wetlands project, to give an inspirational and informative talk. She explained the progress being made to enable visitors to experience a wealth of wildlife habitats, including the new Black Hole Marsh saline lagoon. Plans for the wetlands include integrating the Stop Line cycle route and hides and walkways with access for all. Unfortunately, the sea mist obscured the wonderful coastline but this did not spoil the trip or the walk to Axmouth Harbour and then to Cliff Field Gardens to see the Labyrinth, following warming cups of coffee and delicious biscuits at the Arts Café.

Bernard Dunford, Chairman of the SVCT, said “We were pleased to have the opportunity to show the members of the Board first hand the attractions and interests of the area. Afterwards they said they could never have properly appreciated them until they were explained and interpreted”.

Sainsbury’s Regional Development Executive’s Letter to “Seaton Residents”

March 26th, 2009

Planning application by Sainsbury’s and Modern Electric Tramways Ltd, East Devon District Council planning reference: 09/0557

Further to our public consultation in October regarding a Sainsbury’s proposal for a new store, visitor centre and tramway terminus in Seaton, I am pleased to confirm that we have submitted our planning application and that it is now registered with East Devon District Council.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of the key elements of our proposal and to bring you up to date with changes we incorporated following feedback from residents, businesses and other local organisations.

The proposal includes:

  • 28,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s foodstore
  • Seaton and Jurassic Coast Visitor Centre above the store
  • New Seaton Tramway terminus including shops and café
  • 217 space lower ground long stay car park and 213 space shoppers’ car park
  • Relocated Tourist Information Centre
  • Replacement skate park and children’s play area
  • New and improved pedestrian links to the town centre
  • New public square

During the consultation we received some good suggestions that have led to a number of amendments to our plan, which I set out below:

  • A third floor viewing platform at the top of the Seaton Visitor Centre entrance lobby with panoramic views of the Wetlands and estuary
  • Wrap-around glazing for the visitor centre to enhance panoramic views across the wetlands and across the estuary to The Undercliff
  • Improved acoustic and visual shielding for Fleet Court residents from the skate park which will now be set into the ground, landscaped and protected from flooding
  • Relocated children’s play area away from the main road
  • A more defined public square to include artwork
  • The Tourist Information Centre relocated into the foyer of the visitor centre
  • Extension and conversion of the existing Tourist Information Centre building into a Sustrans hub with storage and washing facilities for visiting cyclists
  • Improved Gateway and signage through to the wetlands

We are confident that our proposals provide Seaton with the best and most realistic opportunity to kick-start regeneration in the town. The healthy mix of uses will provide an attractive food shopping destination, boost Seaton’s tourist offer and improve existing recreational facilities, whilst creating many jobs and helping Seaton to become a focal point in the wider East Devon area.  In fact, the scheme will create 225 new full and part time jobs, 65 temporary jobs and retain 68 jobs related to the current operations on site.

Depending on whether we are successful with our planning application and the duration of the planning process, the development could be open in time for Christmas 2010.

Thank you again for your interest. I have included an artist impression to help illustrate the proposal. If you would like to discuss the application, which has been submitted in partnership with Modern Electric Tramways Ltd (Seaton Tramway), or have any questions about this letter, please contact my colleagues Matt Wooldridge or Sophie Whittle on 01179 073 400 during office hours.

Yours sincerely,

Jamie Baker
Regional Development Executive, Sainsbury’s

Tescos and Sainsburys

October 20th, 2008

Since the appointment of our Project Manager, Tracey Guiry, in September last year, the case for a viable top quality Visitor Centre has been proved and much work towards the realisation of this Centre has been undertaken since then by Tracey.  In order to take these projects forward, in August of this year SWRDA, DCC and EDDC oversaw the incorporation of the Exmouth Seaton Jurassic Coast Interpretation Centres Trust which is managed by a Board appointed from the private sector with Local Authority representatives.  This Board meets on a regular basis, liaising with the Seaton Visitor Centre Trust.

The Visitor Centres proposed for Seaton and Exmouth are part of wider regeneration schemes within these towns, and the feasibility studies undertaken to prove the viability of these Centres have identified the need for funding from developers towards building costs.  The Seaton Visitor Centre Trust, however, is only involved in regeneration issues when they directly affect the proposed Seaton Centre.

Tesco, as many residents of Seaton will be aware, held a public exhibition last week of their proposals for Seaton.  Although they have been briefed by Tracey Guiry on the requirements for a Visitor Centre, those who attended the exhibition were astonished to see that it does not form part of Tesco’s first phase planning application that they are submitting to EDDC shortly.  Tesco and their representatives were not able to explain why the Visitor Centre is excluded from their plans.  Although we have sought a meeting with them before, this has not materialised  and members of Seaton Visitor Centre Trust are now seeking a meeting with Tescos as a matter of urgency.  In the meantime, we ask residents to respond to Tesco and EDDC, urging them to ensure that this Centre is included in their imminent planning application, reminding them of the work and money already spent and of the studies that have proved that such a Centre is not only an important regenerator for the town but is vital for raising Seaton’s profile and for fulfilling its role as a Primary Gateway to the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site..

Another proposal being put to EDDC shortly is from Sainsburys who are seeking to build a supermarket and Visitor Centre in Seaton, together with other facilities.  They have met with members of Seaton Visitor Centre Trust on several occasions to discuss the vision and content of a Visitor Centre.  They are ready to present their plans to residents and are holding a public exhibition in Seaton Town Hall on 23rd, 24th & 25th October.  We hope residents will visit that exhibition and take the time to comment on it.
